Electrical Testing Engineer - Iron Mountain, MI

Northern Star Industries, Inc., a world-class manufacturer located in Iron Mountain, Michigan, is made up of two business units: Systems Control and the BOSS Snowplow. Systems Control is a state-of-the-art designer and manufacturer of equipment enclosures and protection, control, and telecommunications panels for electrical utilities. Currently our Systems Control division is seeking an Electrical Testing Engineer.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Perform functional testing and final acceptance on electrical panels and related equipment including: control panels, relay panels, Navy booths, group controllers, Sub-Station Control Centers and any other electrical cabinets or enclosures
  • Assist engineering in the development and correction of wiring diagram and schematic drawings
  • Ensure processes and documentation comply with all quality department procedures and requirements

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field
  • Minimum one year experience in testing of electrical equipment or electrical maintenance preferred

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of 3-phase power principles, function and operation of electrical relaying devices and associated equipment
  • Ability to program microprocessor based relaying equipment
  • Basic experience with Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Strong ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Familiarity with Omicron and other test equipment

CAD Designer - Iron Mountain, MI

Responsibilities:

  • Draw/Design in CAD (Pro/E, AutoCAD & MicroStation)
  • Make Engineering Change Notices (ECNs)
  • Create stick sets (contains the latest revision of all drawings for each project)
  • Print and fold drawings & create Production Document Release (PDR)
  • Field work: measure panels in the substation for replacement
  • Review accuracy of drawings (compare bill of materials to layout drawings to wiring diagrams)
  • Create layout drawings, weldments, assemblies, wiring diagrams and schematic drawings

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Associates Degree in CAD or 5 years related work experience with parametric-based modeling systems
  • One year of fabrication/manufacturing experience preferred
  • Proficient using solid modeling software (Pro/E Preferred)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

Systems Control is currently seeking an Engineering Manager for our Milwaukee, Wisconsin office. This role is responsible for the overall operation and results of this remote office that includes leadership of Protection and Control Engineers and Designers that service the Electrical Utility Industry. The successful candidate will be accountable for leading this office to achieve sales and operational targets and goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and manage a team of people providing T&D Protection & Control Engineering Services
  • Oversee project quotations and proposals, engineering design and project management
  • Build, develop, and maintain a technically superior Engineering Services team to include: recruitment and selection of new staff; development of staff; communication of expectations/deliverables; coaching, monitoring and appraisal of employee performance; counsel/discipline of underperforming employees; and enforcement of policies and procedures
  • Communicate with other departments to address and resolve field issues
  • Create metrics to measure and monitor the team's successes and opportunities using visual systems such as Control Panels
  • Ultimate accountability for Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost associate with this business unit
  • Strengthen relations of existing customers, driving our effort to identify additional service and product solutions
  • Support the development of new business opportunities and relationships in collaboration with the PCSS team lead in our home office

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, MBA and/or PE preferred
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Transmission & Distribution Protection & Control engineering which involved the creation of one-lines, schematics and wiring diagrams and/or the creation of coordination/relay settings
  • Minimum 5 years' experience managing and leading an engineering team
  • Experience in startup of a service related business, to include staffing and managing

In this role, you will create protection and control schematic diagrams from a 1-Line diagram; create wiring diagrams for both protection and control panels and EE Integration from schematic diagrams; and check/yellow line protection and control wiring diagrams to schematic diagrams.

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (power or control emphasis) is required of all candidates, and a P.E. license or P.E. track is preferred.
