Electrical Testing Engineer

Northern Star Industries, Inc., a world-class manufacturer located in Iron Mountain, Michigan, is made up of two business units: Systems Control and the BOSS Snowplow. Systems Control is a state-of-the-art designer and manufacturer of equipment enclosures and protection, control, and telecommunications panels for electrical utilities. Currently our Systems Control division is seeking an Electrical Testing Engineer.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Perform functional testing and final acceptance on electrical panels and related equipment including: control panels, relay panels, Navy booths, group controllers, Sub-Station Control Centers and any other electrical cabinets or enclosures
  • Assist engineering in the development and correction of wiring diagram and schematic drawings
  • Ensure processes and documentation comply with all quality department procedures and requirements

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field
  • Minimum one year experience in testing of electrical equipment or electrical maintenance preferred

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of 3-phase power principles, function and operation of electrical relaying devices and associated equipment
  • Ability to program microprocessor based relaying equipment
  • Basic experience with Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Strong ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Familiarity with Omicron and other test equipment

Electrical Engineer

Primary responsibilities will include: management of assigned projects from concept to delivery; design control circuits and present them on elementary drawings; and design control system layouts.

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (power or control emphasis) is required of all candidates.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess:

  • The ability to understand the theories and fundamentals of electrical circuits and related components;
  • Advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;

  • The ability to work safely in and around energized electrical enclosures.

Knowledge and understanding of the structure, programming and configuration of the following control devices is also beneficial:

Production Positions

Northern Star Industries, Inc. is a world-class manufacturing company, located in Iron Mountain. We have two business units: The BOSS Snowplow & Systems Control, each with its own ISO 9001:2008 registered facility. Currently we are seeking qualified applicants for the following positions:

  • Machine Operators - Duties include: operating a variety of fabrication equipment such as laser cutting machines, plasma cutting machines, press brakes, plate rolls, saws, drills and shears. In addition, candidates must be able to read blueprints, use measuring tools and devices, and possess some computer skills. Vocational training or previous experience is a plus.
  • Production Assemblers - Duties include: performing all mechanical, hydraulic and electrical assembly for BOSS Snowplow Products; operating machinery required for paint and assembly processes. Fork lift experience is a plus.
  • Contract Assemblers - Duties include: installing control devices, instruments, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, transformers, bus bars and other such devices in control panels and enclosures; preparing and assembling shipping crates; transporting and storing stock, packaging products for shipment including loading of product onto trucks.
  • Wire Persons - Duties include: installing wiring into electrical control and relay panels. Applicants should be able to read blueprints and wiring diagrams, and use standard hand tools. Vocational training or previous wiring experience is necessary.
  • EE Wiring Technicians - Duties include: wiring, cable pulling, connecting and terminating along with any other Electrical tasks related to Equipment Enclosures. Mounting lights, strut, cable tray, AC/DC distribution panels, battery chargers, switches, conduit, panels and any other interior or exterior mounted equipment; painting as required; material handling, shipping preparation and loading/unloading as required. Vocational training or previous electrical experience is required of all candidates.
  • Fabricator Welders - Duties include: welding and grinding products; drilling, tapping, and cutting parts as required for fabrication of products; performing scheduled maintenance and cleaning of weld equipment. Vocational training in MIG welding or previous MIG welding experience is required of all candidates. Experience with robotic welding equipment is a plus.
  • EE Assembly Technicians - Duties include: fabricating large equipment enclosures (e.g. erecting walls and trusses, interior and exterior sheeting, installing trim, insulating, etc.); Mounting lights, strut, cable tray, AC/DC distribution panels, battery chargers, switches, conduit, panels and any other interior or exterior mounted equipment; painting as required; material handling, shipping preparation and loading/unloading as required. Vocational training or previous construction experience is required of all candidates. Experience with hoists/cranes is a plus.
  • Painters - Duties include: operating air assisted spray guns to apply industrial paint finishes on metal products. Additional responsibilities will include spray washing, sanding, and prepping metal parts. Previous painting experience is required of all candidates.

Structural Engineer

Northern Star Industries, Inc., a world-class manufacturer located in Iron Mountain, Michigan, is made up of two business units: Systems Control and The BOSS Snowplow. Currently our Systems Control division is seeking a Structural Engineer.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze current Equipment Enclosure Designs to ensure they comply with all State and Local regulations. This includes but not limited to:
    • Wind Loading
    • Snow Loading
    • Base Loading
    • Live & dead loads
  • Perform Technical Studies and Calculations for existing, new EE and proposed designs to improve:
    • Cost
    • Weight
    • Manufacturability
  • Participate in cost reduction efforts (with guidance from the Product Manager) to design out manufacturing wastes
  • Assist internal ME’s to perform structural analysis on fixtures, carts and other manufacturing related tools and equipment
  • Certify accuracy and completeness of all deliverable products and services in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Develop pick plans for building offloading
  • Additional Responsibilities include:
    • Maintaining project files and documentation
    • Produce Energy efficiency calculations using ASHRAE and Comm Check software packages
    • Submit drawing packages (by State) for review and approvals

Requirements of the ideal candidate:

  • Bachelors Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
  • PE License or ability to be licensed within 1 year required
  • Seven to ten years experience in a building envelop evaluation role (manufacturing or industrial setting preferred)
  • Familiar with NEC, IBC, AISC, MBMA, ASHRAE, IECC and other relevant building codes and standards
  • Experience with Steel Structures, Concrete and Foundations
  • Working knowledge of static and dynamic load applications
  • Ability to perform FEA calculations and analysis
  • Lean Certification a Plus
  • Experience in preparing structural and civil construction plans and specifications
  • Working knowledge of alternative materials and construction methodologies as may be necessary to facilitate clients' needs
  • Proven analytical & problem solving skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively interface with customers (Internal and External)
  • Strong background in computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, CAD programs and other Structural or Civil software packages
